5 Strong Signs You Need a Spring Cleaning Reset

A bright, organized home with minimal clutter, fresh decor, and a calm, inviting atmosphere after a spring cleaning reset.

You’ve scrubbed, dusted, and decluttered, yet something still feels… off. Maybe the mess creeps back within days, or despite your best efforts, your home still feels cluttered and chaotic.

That’s because spring cleaning alone isn’t always enough. While a deep clean is great for refreshing your physical space, it doesn’t address the systems, habits, and lifestyle shifts needed to create a home that stays tidy, functional, and stress-free.

If you’re wondering whether your traditional spring cleaning is cutting it, here are five signs you need a spring cleaning reset instead.

5 Strong Signs You Need a Spring Cleaning Reset

1. You Keep Decluttering the Same Spaces Over and Over

Every season, you fill donation bags, reorganize your closets, and vow to keep your space clutter-free. But a few weeks later? The piles are back.

Why This Happens

Surface-level decluttering doesn’t fix the root problem—without better habits or storage solutions, clutter keeps creeping back.

I see this all the time with my kitchen counters. I tell myself I’ll put things away later, but between a toddler and a baby, later rarely happens. Instead, things pile up, and before I know it, my clean counters are buried again.

How to Fix It

  • Give everything a home: If things don’t have a designated space, they’ll always end up in the wrong place. Make sure it’s accessible—if you always dump mail on the counter, get a mail holder for the counter.
  • Declutter with purpose: Instead of just tidying up, ask, “Does this add value to my life?” If the answer is no, in the words of Elsa, “Let it go.”
  • Set up simple habits: A “reset basket” (a bin to collect random items throughout the day) can keep clutter under control. Assign one per person in the house and make it their responsibility to put items away at the end of the day. Win-win!

2. You’re Cleaning, But Your Home Still Feels Off

Your floors are spotless, and your counters are gleaming, yet your space still doesn’t feel fresh or functional.

Why This Happens

Cleaning removes dirt, but it doesn’t address how your home functions. A cluttered or outdated setup can still feel overwhelming, even when it’s technically “clean.”

How to Fix It

  • Rearrange with intention: Does your space support how you live? Move furniture, adjust storage, or swap items to create better flow. We even tried a little Feng Shui in our home when it made sense!
  • Refresh your decor: Sometimes, all it takes is updating artwork, pillows, or lighting to make a space feel new. I love swapping out tablecloths and small decor items seasonally—Target is my go-to for quick, affordable refreshes!
  • Reduce visual clutter: Too many items on surfaces can make a room feel chaotic, even when clean. Personally, visual clutter makes me feel disorganized and anxious, so I try to keep surfaces clear (TRY being the key word—I do have two under three, so expectations stay realistic!)

3. Your Daily Routines Still Feel Chaotic

You spent a weekend deep cleaning, but your mornings are still rushed, your to-do list is never-ending, and laundry piles up faster than you can fold it.

Why This Happens

Cleaning your home doesn’t fix broken routines. If daily life feels overwhelming, clutter will creep back in, no matter how much you scrub.

How to Fix It

  • Audit your time: Where do things feel the most hectic? What small change would make the biggest impact?
  • Declutter your schedule: If your day is packed with commitments that no longer serve you, it’s time to adjust.
  • Create a weekly reset routine: Dedicate time each week to reset your home and life before things spiral.

4. Your Home Feels Draining Instead of Restorative

The worst thing is waking up and already feeling behind. I hate walking into the kitchen and seeing last night’s dishes, crumbs on the counter, and things left out from the rush of dinner and bedtime. Instead of starting the day fresh, I’m already playing catch-up.

That’s when I realized my space was draining my energy before my day even started.

How to Fix It:

  • Create a nighttime reset habit: Even 5 minutes in the evening to wipe down the counters and clear the sink makes mornings feel lighter and more productive.
  • Identify your “energy-draining zones”: Which areas feel the most overwhelming? Tackle those first. Personally, does my kitchen get cleaned almost every night? Yes! Does my living room? Nope. Find what works for you. There’s only so much time in a day!
  • Make it easy: If cleaning at night isn’t realistic, pick one small habit (like loading the dishwasher) that makes the biggest impact.

5. You’re Holding Onto Things That No Longer Serve You

If you’re cleaning around piles of stuff you don’t use, it’s a sign that decluttering should be the priority over spring cleaning.

Why This Happens

We keep things out of guilt, sentimentality, or the “just in case” mentality—even when they no longer add value to our lives.

I’ve been there: I’m still holding onto pre-baby clothes I might fit into again. But instead of inspiring me, they take up space and remind me of something I haven’t achieved yet.

How to Fix It

  • Be intentional: Ask, “Does this support the life I want to live?”
  • Let go of guilt: If something doesn’t serve you, it’s okay to part with it. And if it really is sentimental to you, it’s okay to keep it! Just give it a home (see Sign #1!).
  • Start small: Choose one category (clothes, books, kitchen items) and commit to decluttering what you don’t truly need.
