As a busy mom, getting a full night’s sleep can feel like a distant dream. Between breastfeeding sessions, toddler wake-ups, and trying to sneak in some quiet time at the end of the day, sleep can often take a back seat. But here’s the good news: you’re not alone! Even if you’re not getting those elusive 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep, you can establish a nighttime routine that helps you optimize sleep, reduce stress, and feel more rested.
How to Optimize Sleep with a Nighttime Routine
Creating a sleep routine as a busy mom doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s all about finding small, manageable ways to wind down, relax, and set yourself up for quality sleep.
Here are my top 6 sleep tips for busy moms.
1. Pre-Kids Bedtime Prep
One thing that’s really helped me is getting myself ready for bed before diving into the kids’ nighttime routine. I wash my face, change into my PJs, and sometimes even squeeze in a quick shower before I put the kids down. Why? Because when you’re running around trying to get little ones to sleep, bedtime can drag on (or turn into a battle!). By getting myself ready first, I have one less thing to do, making it easier to settle down once the kids are finally asleep.
Pro Tip: A warm shower before bed can help lower your body temperature and signal to your body that it’s time for sleep, making this a great addition to your nighttime routine.
2. Dim the Lights
Dimming the lights an hour before bedtime helps your entire family transition into a more relaxed state. Exposure to bright light in the evening can interfere with your body’s production of melatonin, the hormone that helps you sleep. Switching to warm lamps or dimming overhead lights sets the mood for winding down and encourages everyone to start slowing down.
Pro Tip: Consider using phrases like “create a calm environment” and “prepare your body for sleep” as part of your routine to help your mind and body recognize these signals.
3. Tea and Chocolate: A Sweet Nighttime Ritual
After the kids are finally asleep, take a moment for yourself (or with your partner!) by brewing a cup of chamomile tea with honey and adding your favorite sleep support supplement. And yes, we usually enjoy a little treat like chocolate or ice cream! This ritual not only helps you wind down but also gives you a few minutes to connect and relax. If you have a favorite tea or nighttime snack, add it to your routine.
Pro Tip: Consider choosing snacks that promote better sleep, such as dark chocolate or a small serving of yogurt with nuts, which contain sleep-inducing nutrients like magnesium.
4. Take a Tech Break
Avoiding screens before bed can significantly improve your sleep quality. I set my phone to ‘Night Focus’ mode and avoid screens for at least 45 minutes before I plan to sleep. I also use Night Shift from sunset to sunrise to reduce blue light exposure. The only exception is my Kindle—because sometimes a little reading is just what I need! Even then, I make sure it’s set to nighttime mode to minimize blue light exposure.
5. Essential Oils + Breathing Exercises
Create a calming environment with a “sleep” essential oil spray. Lavender, chamomile, and sandalwood are great choices for promoting relaxation and sleep. I like to spray it on my sheets before I climb into bed and then do a few light breathing exercises to help quiet my mind and signal my body that it’s time to rest.
Pro Tip: Adding a short breathing exercise like the 4-7-8 method or box breathing to your nighttime routine can further enhance relaxation and improve sleep quality.
6. Embracing a Mindset Shift for Better Sleep
Middle-of-the-night wake-ups are inevitable when you have little ones. Instead of getting frustrated, embrace the mindset that these moments won’t last forever. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that you’re doing your best. This mindset shift can be a game-changer in helping you stay calm and get back to sleep faster after each wake-up.
Sleep Tips for Busy Moms
Creating a nighttime routine isn’t about achieving perfection; it’s about finding small, manageable ways to create a sense of calm amidst the chaos. My sleep is still interrupted by breastfeeding and occasional toddler wake-ups, but these simple sleep tips help me feel more rested and ready to take on the next day.
