Practical Tips to Simplify Christmas and Avoid Holiday Overwhelm

Simplify Christmas: A cozy setup with a mug of hot cocoa topped with marshmallows and a plate of festive holiday cookies.

The holiday season is magical, but let’s be honest—it can also be incredibly overwhelming. The to-do list feels endless between gift shopping, decorating, cooking, and keeping up with endless traditions. As the magic makers, we often feel the pressure to make everything perfect, but what if letting go of some things made the season more joyful?

This year, I’m choosing to simplify Christmas by focusing on what truly matters to me. Here’s how you can do the same and avoid feeling overwhelmed while creating a meaningful, stress-free holiday season.

Focus on What Matters Most

The first step to simplify Christmas is deciding what’s most important to you and your family. Not every tradition or activity needs to make the cut. Take some time to think about what truly brings joy and connection during this season.

You might even sit down with your family and ask them which traditions they love most. This can help ensure everyone feels included in your plans.

Questions to Ask Yourself

  • Which traditions bring us the most joy as a family?
  • What can we let go of this year without losing the holiday spirit?
  • How can I make space for quality time instead of rushing from one task to another?

For me, that meant saying no to some of the “extras” this year. I’m skipping ornaments on the tree—it’s too much to manage with little ones and a dog. Elf on the Shelf is not (ever?) happening—honestly, he creeps me out and seems like more stress than it’s worth. And, as much as I would love to (and have done in the past), holiday movie marathons are a no-go (even my favorite Harry Potter marathon!). Maybe I’ll get back to it in the next year or two when I actually have uninterrupted time again. These decisions created more time for things my family loves—like baking cookies and reading holiday books.

Let Go of the Guilt

As moms, it’s easy to feel guilty for not doing everything. But simplifying Christmas and skipping what “everybody else” is doing isn’t about failing—it’s about choosing joy over stress.

The pressure to match what others are doing—whether on social media or in your community—can be overwhelming. But remember, the holidays are about connection, not competition.

Saying no to certain things doesn’t mean taking away the magic. It means you’re making room for a holiday season that feels manageable and meaningful. This mindset shift has been a game-changer for me and has allowed my family to enjoy the season more fully. My kids will remember the season’s magic, not whether we did every little thing.

Embrace Simple Traditions

The beauty of the holidays lies in the small, meaningful moments. Lasting memories don’t require Pinterest-worthy perfection (but if that makes you happy, go for it!)

Low-Effort, High-Connection Ideas

  • Holiday Lights Drive: Pile everyone into the car, grab some hot cocoa, and admire the neighborhood lights.
  • Baking Together: Decorate cookies or make a favorite holiday treat as a family.
  • Holiday Books: Create a mini library of festive books to read together each night.

Plan Ahead to Minimize Stress

Planning ahead is one of the best ways to avoid last-minute holiday overwhelm. Even small steps can make a big difference.

Quick Tips for Staying Organized

  • Use a Gift Tracker: Staying organized with gifts and budgets can make a world of difference. My Notion Holiday Hub has been a game-changer for this!
  • Set a Shopping Deadline: Finish your shopping early to avoid the last-minute rush.
  • Prep in Advance: Plan simple meals, batch-cook, or prep holiday treats ahead of time.

By taking control of your schedule, you’ll create more breathing room for the season.

Make Time for Yourself

Amid the holiday chaos, don’t forget about you. Taking time for self-care isn’t selfish—it’s essential for showing up as your best self for your family.

Simple Self-Care Ideas

  • Start your day with a quiet coffee or tea before everyone wakes up (or during the first nap time like I usually do).
  • Schedule a quick workout or a 15-minute meditation session.
  • Treat yourself to something small, like a new holiday-scented candle or your favorite dessert.

A little time for yourself can go a long way in reducing stress and helping you feel recharged.

You Can Simplify Christmas and Still Celebrate

Simplifying Christmas doesn’t mean missing out—it means focusing on the moments that matter most. By letting go of the guilt, embracing simple traditions, and planning ahead, you’ll create a holiday season that feels less overwhelming and more joyful.
