Reclaim Your Time and Joy With These Practical Self-care Tips

Self-care is essential for maintaining your energy, mental health, and overall well-being. For busy moms, finding time for self-care can feel impossible, but integrating small, practical self-care tips into your day can make a huge difference. With a little creativity, you can create a self-care routine that fits seamlessly into your life—even on the busiest days.

Self-care is personal—it’s anything that makes YOU feel recharged. While social media might glamorize bubble baths and wine, real-life self-care is about finding what works in your current season of life. Trust me, I love nothing more than a bubble bath with a glass of wine, but honestly, it’s been YEARS since I’ve had the chance. The best self-care tip? Focus on what works for you right now.

Why Self-Care Matters

Moms juggle endless responsibilities, often leaving little time for themselves. But neglecting self-care can lead to burnout, irritability, and even health issues. Taking even small moments for yourself isn’t just beneficial—it’s essential.

One of the greatest gifts you can give your children is modeling self-care. Showing them how you prioritize your well-being teaches them to value their own. Here are my top self-care tips to help you make self-care a part of your daily routine.

Self-Care Tips to Start Your Day

Your self-care routine doesn’t need to be time-consuming or solitary. For example, one of my priorities is doing my skincare routine daily. With Ella’s boundless energy, finding even five minutes to myself can feel impossible. So, I’ve started doing my skincare with her! She loves to “put it on,” so I pat her face with my hands (no product) while I apply mine. This simple ritual helps me start the day positively and strengthens our bond.

Other ideas include sipping coffee while journaling, stretching for a few minutes, or sitting quietly to center yourself. Small, intentional acts like these can make mornings feel more grounded and less rushed.

Layer Self-Care Into Your Day

One of the simplest ways to incorporate self-care is by layering it into your existing routine. Take a walk with your kids to enjoy some sunshine, or play calming music during your commute to reset your mood.

You can also use everyday moments to recharge—like savoring your favorite snack during nap time or doing deep breathing exercises while waiting in the carpool line. These self-care tips don’t require extra time, making them perfect for busy moms.

Prioritize Physical Health

Physical self-care is a key part of any self-care routine. While it doesn’t have to mean long workouts, finding ways to move your body can boost your energy and mood.

In our house, I’ve created a safe play area in the gym where my kids can entertain themselves while I exercise. It may take longer, but I feel stronger and more energized—and I’m modeling healthy habits for my children.

Whether it’s a brisk walk, a quick yoga session, or a dance party in your living room, movement can be a game-changer for your self-care routine.

Proactively Ask for Help

One of the most important self-care tips is learning to ask for help. Recognizing when you’re overstimulated or anticipating a busy day allows you to plan ahead and ask for help when needed.

My husband has even started noticing when I’m overwhelmed and asks if I need a break. It’s a small but meaningful gesture that makes a big difference. If you’re feeling maxed out and can’t find help, use screen time strategically—put the kids in a safe space, pop on Ms. Rachel for Littles or Daniel Tiger, and take five minutes for yourself. The kids will be fine, and you’ll feel better.

Look for Glimmers

Glimmers are those small, joyful moments that brighten your day—like stepping outside with your kids to soak up the sun or hearing them giggle uncontrollably. These micro-moments are easy to overlook but can significantly impact your emotional and mental well-being.

Make it a habit to pause and notice these moments. Glimmers are small but powerful reminders of the beauty in your day-to-day life.

How to Build a Consistent Self-Care Routine

Consistency is key to making self-care a natural part of your life. Treat it like an appointment you can’t miss, and use tools like Notion or simple phone reminders to help you stay on track.

Remember, self-care doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s about finding what works for you and committing to it regularly. Over time, these small habits will become second nature.

Self-Care Tips to Recharge and Reconnect

Self-care isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. Integrating simple self-care tips into your daily routine allows you to recharge your mind, body, and spirit without sacrificing time with your family. Whether starting your day with a calming ritual, prioritizing your physical health, or savoring moments of joy, self-care is about creating balance and reconnecting with yourself.
