The holidays can be a joyful yet exhausting time. Between to-do lists, family events, and keeping everyone healthy, the holiday season can leave you feeling completely drained. And at the start of January, so many people pressure you to “get back on track,” which can feel overwhelming. Instead of diving into the “new year, new me” trend, January can be the perfect time to reconnect with healthy habits that make you feel your best.
I used to be a “go hard in January” person, but it was never sustainable. Now, I use January to ease into routines that support my daily wellness and personal well-being, setting a foundation that feels manageable for the year ahead.
A Busy Mom’s Healthy Habits for the New Year
Why Small Shifts in Healthy Habits Matter
As busy moms, it’s tempting to put everyone else’s needs first. However, habits like eating well, staying active, and prioritizing rest aren’t just self-care—they’re essential for showing up as your best self. Small, manageable shifts can help you feel more grounded and energized without the overwhelm of an all-or-nothing approach.
The key to a successful wellness journey is meeting yourself where you are today. Start small and take steps that feel realistic. If your goal is 8,000 steps but you’re starting at 3,000, focus on small increases each week. Building incrementally makes it easier to stick with new habits in the long term.
Movement That Feels Good
Regular movement is a great way to take care of yourself both physically and mentally. The Moves App is my go-to, especially with its Tighter Together challenge. This 4-week program helps you push yourself while still being flexible. Madeline, the founder, designs workouts that work wherever you are and however much time you have. As a mom herself, she completely gets the busy mom life. The best part is, you can make the challenge your own, whether you’re easing back into workouts postpartum or looking for a fresh start. This year, my goal is to complete the 30-minute workouts, four times a week.
For variety, I use the Peloton App for cardio, yoga, stretching, and meditation. I love my Peloton Tread, but you don’t need the equipment to benefit. The app offers so many options that fit whatever your day looks like, making it an excellent tool for daily wellness.
Healthy Habits to Nourish Your Body
Fueling your body doesn’t have to be complicated. I’ve been using ChatGPT to simplify meal planning, and it’s been a game-changer. This year, I’m getting back to meal prepping weekly to make eating well easier.
One of my biggest goals is ensuring I get enough protein daily. Protein is the building block of nutrition, and it’s so easy to skimp on it. With the Tighter Together challenge, I’ll be using the Carbon App to track macros, which helps me make sure I’m fueling my body in a way that feels good. Even outside the challenge, tracking a few times a year helps me stay on top of my nutrition and maintain healthy habits that truly support personal well-being.
Healthy Habits for Daily Wellness
While movement and nutrition are foundational, I also lean on other simple habits to support my well-being. These small practices can make a big difference in feeling more balanced and energized.
Hydration
Hydration is one of the simplest yet most impactful healthy habits. I rely on my 40oz Hydro Jug and aim to refill it twice a day. Keeping water within reach—whether on your desk, in the car, or by the couch—makes staying hydrated easy and effortless.
Quiet Time
Finding moments of calm can be transformative. Even five minutes of meditation or sitting quietly can help me recharge. The Peloton App’s meditation options are perfect for quick mindfulness sessions, whether it’s before bed or during a busy afternoon.
Sleep
As a breastfeeding mom with a toddler who often wakes overnight, I know firsthand that getting enough sleep can feel impossible. Instead of aiming for perfection, I focus on optimizing the sleep I do get. Creating a calming bedtime routine, avoiding screens before bed, and using Needed’s Sleep Support all help me rest better, even if it’s not for as long as I’d like. Journaling and Gratitude
Journaling is a practice I use to reflect and stay grounded. I love the Day One app for daily gratitude and reflection. Starting or ending your day with a simple note of appreciation can shift your mindset and keep you focused on the positives.
Simplifying Decisions
Decision fatigue is real, especially during busy seasons. Preparing outfits, reviewing tasks, or meal prepping the night before saves energy for bigger priorities. These small steps free up your mental bandwidth and help your day flow more smoothly.
Reducing Screen Time
Putting down my phone, especially during family time, improves my mental clarity and presence. I use focus modes to limit distractions and create boundaries, ensuring I’m fully engaged in the moment.
Building a Wellness Journey That Works for You
Healthy habits don’t have to feel overwhelming. Start by pairing new habits with existing routines (known as habit stacking). For example, stretch while your coffee brews or take a walk during your kids’ activities. Focus on one or two habits at a time, letting them become part of your rhythm before adding more.
Progress, not perfection, is the goal. Consistency—even in small steps—leads to meaningful results.
Grace and Flexibility in Your Routine
Life is unpredictable, and your wellness journey should reflect that. Some days, drinking enough water feels like a win, and other days, you might check off every habit on your list. The key is approaching your routine with flexibility and kindness, knowing that every effort contributes to your overall well-being.
